Ling Gao, M.D., Ph.D.

Ling Gao, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor and Clinical Scientist in the College of Medicine Department of Dermatology at UAMS.

Dr. Gao’s career has been dedicated to basic dermatology research and patient care. After completing medical school at the Tongji Medical College in China, she completed a cutaneous biology research fellowship in Germany from 1995 to 1996.  This was followed by Ph.D. graduate training in the Department of Pathology in Uppsala, Sweden from 1996 to 2001 where she studied non-melanoma skin cancer and tumor suppressor genes.  Dr. Gao next engaged in two post-doctoral research fellowships at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri from 2001 to 2006 with research studies focused on bone cancer metastasis and then melanoma carcinogenesis.  She returned to clinical medicine with an internship in Internal Medicine followed by residency training in the Department of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis in 2010.

Dr. Gao joined our faculty in 2010 with her primary effort directed toward basic science studies of a rare but potentially lethal skin cancer called Merkel cell carcinoma.  Her research is currently supported by the College of Medicine Department of Dermatology, the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute and by a grant awarded in 2011 by the UAMS Translational Research Institute.

Her clinical interests parallel her basic science studies.  She has clinical expertise in the multi-disciplinary care of patients with Merkel cell carcinoma and welcomes referrals from other health care providers for care of these patients.  She also sees adult patients with a wide range of dermatologic disorders in the Dermatology Clinic of the UAMS Outpatient Center.

Dr. Ling Gao is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology.
